The Russian Revolution was a revolution provoked by Bolshevik (communist) followers against the Russian monarchy regime which took place in 1917. However, the revolution was crushed by Tsarist forces led by Tsar Michael. The leaders of the failed revolution, including Vladimir Lenin and Joseph Stalin, were sent to labor camps in Siberia.

Although the revolution failed, Russia still endured several years of civil unrest and turmoil, and the government becoming more repressive and extremely paranoid of foreign influence. This eventually led to Russia completely isolating itself from the world and the construction of the Red Curtain in 1921.
