Resistance 3 is a 2011 science fiction post-apocalyptic first-person shooter video game developed by Insomniac Games and published by Sony Computer Entertainment for the PlayStation 3. Resistance 3 is the final installment in the Resistance trilogy and the last Resistance game to be developed by Insomniac Games.[1][2]

Resistance 3 received generally positive reviews from critics, some of whom deemed it the best in the series, but the game sold poorly and was a commercial failure.[3] On April 8, 2014, the Resistance 3 online servers, along with those for Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, were shut down by Sony.[4]

Gameplay[]

Unlike Resistance 2, the game retains mostly the same gameplay mechanics as the first game albeit with several changes. The weapon wheel from Fall of Man returns. Another mechanic carried over from the first game is the health system: the regenerative HP has been dropped and replaced with health system which can only be healed with Sym-Bacs. However the durability of the player against all attacks is much higher than previous games (although an unlockable cheat can grant regeneration). The controls have been tweaked to be more compatible with modern FPS's e.g., L3 to dash and R3 to melee. These changes apply to both the Campaign and Multiplayer. The game features PlayStation Move support and Stereoscopic 3D.[5]

Weapons[]

The game sees a mixture of old and new weapons, which are upgradeable and become more powerful the more they are used. There are twelve weapons in total: six new and six returning. New weapons are the Mutator, Sledgehammer, Deadeye, Atomizer, Cryogun, and Wildfire. Weapons returning from the previous games are the Bullseye, Marksman, Magnum, Auger, Rossmore, and Carbine. The Shrapnel Grenade and Molotov serves as replacements for the Fragmentation Grenade and Air Fuel Grenade respectively. The new EMP Grenade deactivates Chimeran energy shields and drones.

Multiplayer[]

Resistance 3 featured an online 16-player competitive multiplayer component. It offered five game modes: Team Deathmatch, Chain Reaction, Deathmatch, Breach, and Capture the Flag. It also included a customizable progression system where players spend points earned by playing online to unlock customized loadouts that include various attributes. Additionally, there is a cooperative mode that allows players to team up and play the story mode together, either by using the split-screen option or through an online connection.

The multiplayer servers were shut down by Sony on April 8, 2014.

Plot[]

In 1953, shortly after Lt. Nathan Hale's death at the hands of Joseph Capelli, Hale's body was recovered by SRPA in which Dr. Fyodor Malikov discovered a cure from Hale's blood, which he then isolated it and created a vaccine to the Chimeran virus. Capelli is dishonorably discharged from SRPA for Hale's death, despite having done it due to Hale having turned into a Chimera. Four years later, Capelli married Susan Farley, the adoptive-sister of Nathan Hale, and now lives in a community of survivors in Haven, Oklahoma. By this time, the Chimera had conquered Earth and roughly 90% of humanity had been killed or converted. Those left had resorted to hiding under the ruins, trying to survive in a bleak world dominated by the Chimera, who are intent to wipe out the last remnants of the human race.

Despite their efforts, Haven's community is discovered by a Chimeran Death Squad. Capelli lead the town's fighters against the Chimera until they have summoned a Terraformer, a massive terraforming platform, to destroy the town. While the townspeople prepares to evacuate, Capelli is reunited with Dr. Malikov, who have had spent the last few months trying to find Capelli for help to stop the Chimera from finishing their goal in wiping out humanity. Malikov explains that when Daedalus's flagship was destroyed by the fission bomb, the bomb's explosive energy served as a catalyst to the Chimeran tower network to open a wormhole over New York City as part of their plan to permanently freeze the planet and render it uninhabitable for humanity. Capelli refuses to help him, but his wife begs him to reconsider, as their son Jack is too weak to survive such a harsh environment.

Capelli and Malikov start their journey on a trawler and make their way through the Mississippi River. Two days later, due to the thickening fog, they lose their way and cut through the flooded town of Wrightsburg, where they ended up fighting off hordes of Feral Chimera and Military Chimera patrols until their boat is destroyed by a Goliath. The men survived the attack and washed up in St. Louis.

With Malikov too injured to continue, Capelli enters the city and encounters a resistance group, the Remnants. In exchange for their help to fix their VTOL and providing medicine to Malikov, the Remnants' leader Charlie Tent agrees to help take them to New York. However, they are ambushed by Chimeran fighters near Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania, forcing Capelli and Malikov to ditch the Remnants. After evading and fighting through Chimeran patrols, they reached an abandoned coal mining town occupied by survivors led by Jean Rose. Capelli helps Jean in finding her husband and the town's priest, Jonathan, who had went missing several days ago while hunting "Satan", a large Chimeran creature who inhabits the nearby mines. Capelli tracks down Jonathan, and they manage to kill Satan. Out of gratitude, the Roses repair an old coal train and allowing them to resume their journey.

While en route, Malikov reveals to Capelli that after the wormhole was formed, SRPA launched a desperate attempt to destroy the New York tower that ended in failure. Furthermore, Malikov sadly admits to Capelli that he will likely never see his family again, meaning the entire journey is essentially a suicide mission. But Capelli knew that already, stating that they are doing their best to do so this far. Their journey is soon interrupted by a pack of survivalists, the "Wardens", who assault the train. Although Capelli fights off the Wardens, the train is soon derailed by a herd of Widowmakers. Trapped under the train wreckage, Capelli helplessly watch Malikov being beheaded by the Warden leader, Mick Cutler. Capelli is then taken to the Wardens' hideout, Graterford Prison, where he is forced to fight in a gladiator ring against Grims and other Wardens. He is soon freed by Mick's lackey, Herbert Sawicki, a talented engineer who is responsible for maintaining the prison's defenses. Herbert tasks Capelli with disabling the prison's defenses - which is created from modified Chimeran Drones that prevents the prison from being targeted by the Chimera - so he can stage a breakout. The plan succeeds and the Chimera attacks the prison. While disabling the last drone, Capelli is attacked by Mick but after a brutal fistfight Capelli kills him and escapes the prison with Herbert and the other prisoners as the Chimera lay waste to the prison.

Now on his own, Capelli finally reaches New York, which is almost completely consumed in snow and ice. He finds a working radio in an abandoned building and makes a farewell broadcast to his wife, saying that Malikov is dead and without him, any chance of shutting down the tower is gone. Despite this, Capelli resolved to try anyway. After fighting through New York and getting close to the tower, he is cornered and overwhelmed by a massive Chimeran force. But at the last second he is saved and extracted by Charlie and Ellis Turner in their VTOL. Charlie offers to take him back home, but Capelli persuades to help him to destroy the tower by hijacking a Terraformer and make it crash into it. The two disables the platform's controls and sabotaging its power core, thereby maneuvering it to collide with the tower. With tower destroyed, the wormhole is sealed and Earth's temperatures is reverted to normal.

Capelli is soon reunited with Susan and Jack. Meanwhile, numerous resistance groups from all over the planet are reporting that the Chimera are in complete disarray. Eventually, human forces were able to exterminate the Chimera and rebuild their world.

Development[]

Development for Resistance 3 went into production after the release of Resistance 2. After examining the negative feedback Resistance 2 had received, Insomniac designed Resistance 3 to be much more similar to Fall of Man.[6]

Insomniac made Resistance 3 to have a more darker look and feel than the previous games by portraying humanity having lost the war against the Chimera in which animation director Kevin Grow described its setting as the "end of days" for humanity.[7] Insomniac shifted away from the military focus depicted in the previous games, and instead centered Resistance 3's story from a civilian perspective in order to, according to creative director Michael Smith, bring a "more personal feel."[7][8] The game's story is inspired by Cormac McCarthy's 2006 post-apocalyptic novel The Road, which was read by the developers during their development of Fall of Man and Resistance 2.[9] Other post-apocalyptic movies, such as The Road Warrior and Children of Men, and monster movies such as the Jurassic Park movies and King Kong also influenced the game's narrative and setting.[10] Human weapons in the game are depicted to be worn and improvised to reflect the post-apocalyptic setting.[11] Insomniac had long planned to set up Joseph Capelli as the protagonist of Resistance 3 during the development of Resistance 2 and its alternate reality game Project Abraham.[11]

Insomniac used Sony San Diego's motion-capture technology to record body, facial, and vocal performances simultaneously, rather than body capture and add voices later that was previously done in their development of Resistance 2.[7] Insomniac had actors perform alongside one another rather than record voice work individually in a recording room.[7][12]

Insomniac scaled down multiplayer to eight-on-eight skirmishes in contrast to Resistance 2 hosting 60 players in Competitive mode. Cameron Christian, senior designer and multiplayer lead, stated the scale down was to focus more on weapons and perks, and allowing the creation of tighter and more intimate environments, and "more back-and-forth, in-your face battles that really show off our weapons and abilities."[8] Insomniac abandoned the eight-player standalone co-op mode from Resistance 2 in favor of a two-player co-op mode to allow players to enjoy a uniform gaming experience.[11]

Chimera enemy AI have been improved from the previous games in which Insomniac's Cinematic Traversal technology allows enemies to have a suite of context-sensitive movement options, such as cutting off and flanking players.[11]

The weapons were originally to have 5-10 smaller upgrades for each weapon that were "just small, stats-based changes, such as larger clip size, slightly higher accuracy, etc." However, they were quickly called out internally for "not being Insomniac enough." The developers redesigned the upgrades to make each one very unique and a significant augmentation and enhancement to the functionality of the gun that was being upgraded.[10]

The musical score for Resistance 3 was composed by Boris Salchow, who previously worked on Resistance 2.[13]

On October 11, 2009, a billboard for Resistance 3 was spotted on location in Shreveport, Louisiana. The billboard was seen on the set of the 2011 film Battle: Los Angeles, which was being produced by Columbia Pictures. Columbia Pictures is owned by Sony Pictures Entertainment. On the third Battle: Los Angeles trailer the Resistance 3 billboard is visible.[14] When asked for comment by IGN.com, an Insomniac Games representative said, "We've made no announcements at this time."[15] The billboard was taken down several days after the photo was leaked onto the internet.

On November 11, 2009, people found out that an artist by the name of Ben Mauro had put on his LinkedIn profile; he spent three sleepless months from March until May 2009 crafting content for several projects, including "RCF2" (presumably Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time), "R3" and some unannounced items.[16]

On March 3, 2010, Community Manager James Stevenson posted on his Twitter account telling viewers that: "Over the last couple of months, the burning question amongst all of our fans out there has been, 'what's going on?' As far as I can remember, this is the longest stretch of time without Insomniac having announced a future project, leaving many of you wondering what exactly we're up to in the walls of our Burbank and Durham studios." "More than one game" is said to be en route, although the title is not the long speculated 'surprise Sony sequel' (Resistance 3), Stevenson adding on Twitter that this "is not a game from Insomniac."[17]

On August 12, 2010, Insomniac teased the world with: "Congrats to @IrrationalGames on revealing BioShock: Infinite. Trailer looks great. We can barely resist joining the announcement fun!" and five days later, on a Tuesday, they officially announced Resistance 3 on Twitter with these comments: "We are ecstatic to announce Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One - 4-player online and same screen drop in drop out co-op coming to PS3 in Fall 2011" which was then proceeded by "Oh, you wanted Resistance? Well, why not two games? We are also incredibly excited to (finally) announce Resistance 3. Coming to PS3 in 2011!"[18]

On August 17, 2010, Resistance 3 was officially announced, along with the announcement of Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One, at Sony's Gamescom 2010 press conference in Cologne, Germany alongside a live-action trailer for the game.[19] In Insomniac Games' Newsletter:

Global Resistance was a social media strategy game designed to promote the release of Resistance 3, where players could choose to play as Human or Chimera. Global Resistance had exclusive unlockable content for Resistance 3, which includes multiplayer skins and concept artworks. The game was disabled when the multiplayer servers for the Resistance trilogy closed on April 8, 2014.

Downloadable Content[]

The downloadable content for Resistance 3 includes the "Survival" game pack along with the "Brutality" game pack. Both packs were removed in March 2014 from PlayStation Store, although only in Europe, around the same time of the multiplayer server's closure. However, the Brutality pack returned shortly after, possibly due to being also playable in single player.

Owners of specially marked copies of SOCOM 4 were able to download and play the beta on August 4 using the codes provided with that game, while PlayStation Plus subscribers in region 2 territories gained access on August 10.[21] On August 23, the beta opened to worldwide subscribers of PlayStation Plus.[22] Insomniac announced that they would give away codes via Facebook and Twitter to join the beta. The public beta began on August 30. The beta offered two multiplayer modes: Team Deathmatch and Chain Reaction. These modes were playable on two maps. People that played the beta between August 30 and September 4 received a SRPA Nathan Hale skin for Resistance 3. The beta ended on September 4.[23] Resistance 3 has two demos, one for purchasing Battle: Los Angeles on Blu-ray and the other is downloadable from the PlayStation Store.

PlayStation Home[]

On September 8, 2011, Insomniac Games released a new space for PlayStation Home called "Resistance Diner" which also includes a mini-game mode called "Scavenger Hunt".[28]

Reception[]

Resistance received generally favorable reviews. Critics praised the campaign, story tone, and enjoyable gameplay.

IGN said, "In terms of tone, Insomniac has really amped up the gut-wrenching terror for Resistance 3. This is the darkest and most violent game in the series, and almost the entire second act of the game will have you on the edge of your seat."[29] GameSpot praised the game for its exciting, deep campaign and fun multiplayer.[30]

Game Informer criticized the "bland environments", "predictable" level design, and "numerous glitches" that "halt the flow of the game entirely."[31] The A.V. Club gave it a B+, saying that the game "delivers the goods, make no mistake. They just happen to be the goods that gamers already had, dolled up in a shiny new package."[32] Digital Spy likewise gave it four stars out of five and said that the game "doesn't exactly rewrite the book on first-person shooters, but it offers thoroughly enjoyable gameplay, with a low learning curve, set against a strong narrative. Fans of the previous games will find much to love here, and even newcomers will find it a good jumping on point thanks to the intuitive controls."[33]

However, Metro UK gave it a score of seven out of ten and said, "Although this is a considerably more interesting and accomplished game than any of its predecessors it's still nowhere near the cutting edge of the first person shooter genre. And we say that not just because of its abandonment of all that Halo introduced to the concept a decade ago."[34]

Resistance 3 was the seventh best-selling game in the United States during its first month of release, selling 180,000 copies. In the UK it entered the PS3 software chart in fourth position in the first week of its launch.[35]
