Maquis Fortress far distance

The Maquis Fortress.

The Maquis Fortress was the headquarters of the Maquis located in Luxembourg City. The fortress was largely destroyed by the Chimera on September 3, 1951.

History[]

During the Chimeran occupation of Europe, the Maquis established a base inside a castle in Luxembourg City, serving as the last bastion of European resistance against the Chimera. The fortress contained science laboratories that were used by MDC scientist Dr. Claude Bouchard in his research on the Chimera conversion process.[1]

In early September 1951, the Maquis and British forces planned to launch an assault on the Paris tower from the fortress. The Chimera soon discovered the fortress' existence in which they dispatched three Earth Movers to destroy the fortress. However, the Earth Movers were destroyed by James Grayson.[2] Despite losing the Earth Movers, Chimeran forces launched a massive assault on the fortress. The Chimera deployed Burrowers to destroy the tunnels and weaken the defensive structures surrounding the fortress.[3] Parts of the fortress, including the casemates and the lower tunnels, were quickly overrun by the Chimera. To attack the defense lines surrounding the stronghold, the Chimera sent heavy machines including Goliaths, Stalkers, and Hammers.[1] The Maquis eventually ordered the evacuation of all remaining personnel and refugees on VTOLs while soldiers such as Grayson and Stephen Cartwright were tasked with defending the evacuation zone from the Chimeran assault for as long as possible. Despite the fortress's rapid collapse, the Maquis was able to evacuate the majority of the survivors to Reims, their last remaining safe zone.[1]

Casemates[]

For almost two years the Maquis had been living inside the casemates beneath Luxembourg.[4] The main armory, the VTOL hangar, and the main generator were located within this complex. The casemates were almost completely destroyed by Burrowers during the siege.[3]

Lower tunnels[]

The lower tunnels were mainly used for storage and radio communication. The dormitories were located in this lower part of the fortress.

Science labs[]

The science labs were used for research on the Chimeran virus. The majority of scientists were evacuated during the siege of the fortress, with the exception of Dr. Claude Bouchard, who was killed during the battle.

Defensive bunkers[]

The defensive bunkers, trenches and walls served an important role during the defense of the evacuation zone. The bunkers were equipped with Sentry Guns and Longbow Railguns, while the defensive walls were equipped with larger artillery guns.

Trivia[]

  • Some Cloven soldiers appear on several occasions during the siege of the fortress. They can be seen on a VTOL landing platform and on the defensive bunkers. It is not clear why they were there and how they got there during the battle.[5]
  • Despite not being present in Resistance: Retribution, a British soldier reports during a cutscene that the Chimera dispatched Stalkers to the fortress.[1]
