Reading through Dr. Claude Bouchard's records and files, it's clear Raine's father knew more about the Cloven than he was willing to share. He studied live Cloven specimens for years, testing blood samples, comparing genetic structures. In his final report he claims the Cloven were created as the result of an accident in the early years of the Chimera invasion. A Russian scientist-an old colleague of his named Dr. Malikov-had attempted to create a vaccine against the Crawler infection. Tens of thousands of Russian soldiers were inoculated before Malikov realized something was wrong. By then it was too late. While the vaccine worked- the Chimera ignored anyone who was inoculated-one could hardly say Malikov's program was a success. The price a soldier paid for immunity from the Chimera was physical mutation and madness. The soldiers were ignored by the Chimera because they had become part Chimera, part human and wholly insane. The Angry Night is the night the Cloven were born. Is the face captured in the photos we keep finding in the mouths of dead Cloven, the face of Dr. Malikov?
