Lexi Kuptchenko (Russian: Лекси Купченко), also known by a Western audience as "The Runner," was a Russian explorer and refugee. He first appeared in The Silent Garden, a blog post created for the marketing campaign of Resistance: Fall of Man.

Biography[]

Not much is known about Kuptchenko's life. In the late 1930s (or perhaps early 1940s), Lexi worked at a Research Facility in Tyumen, a city in Western Siberia, Russia. By this point, the Chimera had already begun to conquer large parts of Central and Eastern Russia. While conducting research in the laboratory, he and a colleague of his, Beatrice Mantel, discovered something that would "change the future."[1] At risk of being overrun by "them," the research team in Tyumen decided to split up and take wathever evidence they could with them.[1] Lexi was tasked with bringing a Chimeran skull to Estonia, while Beatrice decided to travel towards the Chinese border. Their ultimate objective was to warn the outside world of the Chimeran threat with the evidence they had gathered during their research in Russia, since Russia's isolationist policies had prevented any information from coming out of the country.

In 1947, Lexi eventually arrived at the British Embassy in Estonia. Upon arriving at the embassy, his hands were "completely frozen around a leather satchel which contained a skull with six eyes slightly larger than a human skull."[2] An official statement was made by the registrar at the embassy, dated 15 February 1947. According to the statement, The Runner had claimed to have traveled a great length through Russia and had reported of a "catastrophe" to the east.[1] He was referred to by the British Embassy as a "refugee," an acknowledgement that he had escaped serious conflict. However, the registrar's statement did not suggest that any plan was put into action to investigate Lexi’s claims. Later that same month, Lexi died under mysterious circumstances en route to Great Britain, while carrying the Chimeran skull with him. His death was reported on in the press.[3]
