Jonathan "Johnny" Grayson was the older brother of James Grayson. He was a Pilot Officer in the Royal Air Force.

Biography[]

Since they were children, Johnny and James lived a peaceful life until the Chimera emerged from Russia. After the outbreak of the Chimeran War, their father rejoined the Royal Air Force. Soon Johnny and James also followed their father, in which they became pilot and gunner respectively. When their father was later killed in combat, Johnny became the breadwinner for his family whilst at the same time trying to serve his country. But for his brother, James grew disillusioned with military service and he left the RAF. As the domestic situation in England grew worse, Johnny began to disapprove of Johnny's rebellious behavior. Eventually, Johnny and his brother fell into an argument in which the latter accused Johnny of not caring their family but only focused on being a "hero". Johnny in turn tried to explain to James that the war against the Chimera has been growing worse and desperate for humanity. James, however, disbelieved his brother's words and he left their home to join a street gang.[1]

War in Europe[]

A few days later Johnny was called to aid France, and his mother was put in the care of the RAF. When the war advanced to France, Johnny and his RAF squadron fought the Chimera and became a decorated war hero. He and his squadron flew 38 missions over Germany and Belgium. During this time, Johnny became friends with his gunner Ryan.

Johnny and his squadron later volunteered for a high-risk mission over Berlin. Unfortunately, during the battle, his plane was shot down by a Chimeran Fighter.[2] Johnny and Ryan survived, but they were presumed dead by the British military. They were stuck 150 miles behind Chimeran lines, and slowly began to make their way back to the front, dodging Chimeran patrols and living off of what little food they could find.

After a week of moving back towards France, they encountered a group of mostly German refugees who were unknowingly moving into Chimeran territory. Johnny and Ryan joined them into helping them escape west into France, and becoming their de-facto leaders. However, as they brought the refugees to France, one refugee disobeyed an order from Johnny and set a fire during the night, attracting a Chimeran patrol.[3] Some of the refugees and Ryan were killed. Johnny was able fight off the patrol and brought the survivors to Dunkerque, where they were to be evacuated, although Johnny stayed behind to help the Maquis in attempting to stop the Chimera from digging tunnels underneath the English Channel.[4] The mission was a failure: the Chimera were able to dig under the English Channel and emerged into London. Subsequently, Johnny returned to England to battle the Chimera on British soil. On the flight to London he briefly met Rachel Parker.[5]

Infection and Death[]

When Johnny returned to England, he once again volunteered for a high-risk mission; this time over Chimera-occupied London. Before he left, he saw James one last time. James was in a hospital after being wounded from saving his squad from a Titan. Johnny admonished James for disobeying a direct order that endangered the lives of his men. Furthermore, Johnny deemed his brother as still self-centered and irresponsible after looking into James' bootcamp record. Despite his disapproval of his brother's behavior, Johnny tried to encourage James to be more responsible. But again, James did not heed Johnny's advice and the brothers departed on bitter terms.[5]

Shortly afterward, Johnny went on his mission over London. His plane was shot down and his entire squadron was wiped out.[6] Johnny survived the crash, but was captured and taken to a conversion center in Manchester, where he was infected with the Chimeran virus. On May 15, 1951, his brother and a squad of soldiers breached the conversion center and discovered Johnny, who has completely succumbed to the virus. James then euthanized his brother with a gunshot to the head. Johnny's body was given a burial by his brother who took his flight jacket. Johnny's infection and death deeply affected James, who immediately developed a personal vendetta against the Chimera. James would desert his unit and went on to singlehandedly destroy twenty-six conversion centers across Britain until the end of the Chimeran occupation. James carried his vendetta before he finally come to terms with his brother's death.
