Insomniac Games is an American video game developer based in Burbank, California and a studio of PlayStation Studios. The company is most known for developing several early PlayStation mascots, Spyro the Dragon, Ratchet and Clank, as well as the Resistance franchise, Sunset Overdrive, and the Marvel's Spider-Man series with Marvel Games. In 2019, the studio was acquired by Sony Interactive Entertainment, becoming a part of SIE Worldwide Studios (now known as PlayStation Studios).

History[]

Insomniac Games was founded in 1994 by Ted Price as Xtreme Software, and was renamed Insomniac Games a year later. They developed the first-person shooter Disruptor for the PlayStation, which was released in 1996. Soon afterward, Insomniac began developing games for Sony Computer Entertainment.

In 1998, Insomniac Games developed and released their next game,Spyro the Dragon featuring a purple dragon named Spyro. The game was wildly popular in the year of its release and received two sequels, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage and Spyro: Year of the Dragon. After releasing the three Spyro games, Insomniac moved on to developed its first PlayStation 2 project, Ratchet & Clank in 2002, which became a critical success and spawned the Ratchet & Clank franchise.

Following the launch of the PlayStation 3, and after the completion of Ratchet: Deadlocked, Insomniac developed Resistance: Fall of Man, Insomniac's first first-person shooter after Disruptor. Resistance: Fall of Man was a launch title for the PlayStation 3 in 2006. The game was a financial and critical success, despite causing controversy over the use of Manchester Cathedral. Development of the sequel soon began, Resistance 2, which was released in 2008. Resistance 2 was released to generally positive reviews, but there was some criticism of the game's story and aspects of the campaign, while the game's overall changes from its predecessors drew polarized reactions from critics and fans. After reviewing player's negative feedbacks to Resistance 2, Insomniac developed Resistance 3 in 2011 which introduced some mechanics from Fall of Man, and focused on narrative. Although Resistance 3 was regarded by its creators as the best game in the series, it was sold poorly and was a financial failure.[1] In early 2012, Ted Price announced that the company would not be involved in any future Resistance projects. Sony retains the intellectual property rights to the franchise.[2]

Trivia[]

  • Insomniac Games have named their next gen star "Nathan" along with Naughty Dog; Nathan Hale in Resistance and Nathan Drake in Uncharted, this is iconic due to the fact that Insomniac and Naughty Dog have always been parallel. For example: Both have had a PS2 series which had three games, then it would have a game which was incredibly different from the first three, then there would be a PSP game made by High Impact Games, then there would be a PSP game starring the usual sidekick.
