Infected Mode

A message that appears in the menu after "infecting" Resistance: Retribution.

Infected Mode is a special game mode for Resistance: Retribution. This feature can be obtained by connecting Retribution on the PlayStation Portable to Resistance 2 on the PlayStation 3 with a USB cable. New gameplay features and intel are unlocked after "infecting" the PSP.

Infected Mode provides an alternate, non-canonical story, in which James Grayson is recruited by Specter Team's Lieutenant David LaSalle for a dangerous mission in Europe. In this story, Grayson has been injected with a version of the Chimeran virus. In Infected Mode, Grayson wears a Sentinel uniform and has glowing Chimeran eyes. The infection also bestows Grayson new abilities, such as regenerative health (similar to Resistance 2) and breathing underwater. This allows Grayson access to previously unreachable hidden areas throughout the game. Other gameplay changes in the story mode includes Grayson's immunity to the Burrower's toxic gasses, dialogue changes, and the absence of health pickups. The HE .44 Magnum, a weapon from Resistance 2, is unlocked in this mode.

Infected Intel

New pieces of intel become available in this mode. The Plasma Grenade is unlocked after collecting all Infected Intel.

Trivia

• James Grayson's picture in the pause menu and his character model in the main menu both change after switching to Infected Mode on the PSP. Additionally, the color of Grayson's health bar changes from red to yellow.
• In the PS4 and PS5 versions of Resistance: Retribution, Infected Mode can simply be accessed through the Settings menu. These versions also include three trophies for Infected Mode.
