Sergeant Fredrick Niland
H Company, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st
Airborne Division
Dear Sergeant Niland,
I extend my most profound condolence to you on the
loss of your brother Lieutenant Preston Niland, 22nd
Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, who died on
July 17, 1951 as a result of wounds received in action
against the enemy.
News of your brother's death comes as a great shock to
all of us and his loss will be keenly in felt in this
organization. I sincerely hope that the knowledge that
Preston was an exemplary soldier and died while
serving his country will comfort you in this hour of
great sorrow. Personally, and for the officers and men
of this command, please accept our deepest sympathies.
Our records indicate that all three of your brothers
have been killed in action, which means that you as the
sole surviving male in your family, have been granted
an honorable discharge from the United States Army.
(Enclosure.)
Sincerely yours,
Captain Phillip Harvey
