"Violence, selfishness, as individuals it is our greatest strength, but as a species it is our greatest weakness."
―Fyodor Malikov[src]

Doctor Fyodor Malikov (Russian: Фёдор Мaликов) was a Russian scientist who worked for SRPA. He was originally responsible for creating the Cloven and later the Sentinels. He is a supporting main character in Resistance 2 and Resistance 3. He was also mentioned in some intel in documents in Resistance: Retribution and the Project Abraham viral website.

Biography[]

Fyodor Malikov was born in 1896 and grew up becoming an accomplished scientist in the field of biology. By the time the Chimera made their first appearance and began their attack on Russia in 1927, Russia was slowly being conquered and the existence of the Chimera was still a mystery. Malikov secretly worked for the Russian government and soon discovered the existence of the Pure Chimera in the crater created from the Tunguska Event.[1] He was able to obtain a sample of Pure Chimeran DNA and used it to create an experimental vaccine which showed promise in creating a resistance to the Chimeran virus.

The Cloven[]

Malikov experimented with Pure Chimeran DNA and undertook several genetic experiments with several other Chimeran DNA. He created a serum called I-8 to be used on surviving Russian soldiers in order to make them immune to the Crawler infection and effectively turning them into super soldiers. On January 1, 1927, Malikov inoculated tens of thousands of soldiers.[2] The soldiers placed their trust in Malikov that this would work. For several months, the injections worked perfectly, and they were resistant to the virus and were effective in combating the Chimera.

But by November, the soldiers began acting strangely and had been experiencing horrible nightmares and eventually succumbing to insanity.[2] Disturbingly, they began calling Malikov their "father" and considered themselves his "children", and further claiming that they had visions, and that their blood speaks to them. Around early 1928, their supposed leader, Andrei Vezenskiy, came to Malikov and explained what was happening to them. Extremely concerned, Malikov tried to make sense of what Andrei was saying. Andrei then began to threaten Malikov by showing what appeared to be telekinesis and announced that the "children" would go out into the world before he attacked Malikov.[3]

Somehow, Malikov survived the struggle and fled the oncoming Chimera and the insane soldiers on April 20, 1928.[2] In September 1930, it was then that over 90% of the soldiers became AWOL and called themselves the Cloven in which they become much of a threat as the Chimera. In response to these developments, Malikov worked desperately to improve his vaccine, but his efforts were hindered as he was forced to move to avoid the encroaching Chimera. It was during his travels that Malikov became an excellent marksman and managed to defend Karachev from the Chimera for sixteen years before being "liberated" by American SRPA agents in the early 1940s.[4] After Russia fell, Malikov worked for SRPA to again find a cure to the Chimeran virus and to make up for his mistakes with the Cloven. He worked with many scientists in Europe who knew about the Chimeran threat, such as Dr. Claude Bouchard.[5]

Project Abraham[]

In 1950, Malikov became the principal researcher of Project Abraham in which he was tasked to create a serum that will develop super-soldiers dubbed "Sentinels". Malikov worked from Station Genesis and developed his serums and vaccines for the project's test subjects. The first subject, Joseph Capelli, was rendered comatose. Malikov had Capelli brought to Station Genesis to help with his current work.[6]

Malikov created several anti-virus tests using Pure Chimeran DNA. He made sure that he did not recreate the Cloven and had made a few adjustments to the Alpha series to create a Beta series serum. However, the results were not good, and the soldiers either died or were converted. He eventually created a Gamma series which successfully worked in contrast to its predecessors. 70% of the soldiers survived at least 72 hours beyond the point of infection, and less than 10% suffered from extreme forms of dementia and psychosis.[7]

Malikov eventually improved the Gamma series and ordered that two subjects, Jordan Shepherd and Nathan Hale, to be injected with the serums.[8] Shepard had an immunity deficiency and began suffering similar symptoms to the Cloven before eventually transforming into a being known as Daedalus. Hale also spoke of visions in his head and then slipped into a coma for a short period of time. It had appeared that the virus inside Hale was kept dormant. Hale recuperated from Malikov's serum, and his results were forwarded to Malikov.[9] Hale would later be shipped to Britain to participate in Operation Deliverance as part of a live trial by SRPA.

Malikov frequently interrogated Daedalus to learn more about the Chimera before Daedalus was transferred to SRPA Station Igloo in Iceland after he was deemed too dangerous to be kept in Station Genesis.[10] On July 15, 1951, Malikov was present at Station Igloo when the Chimera launched an attack on the facility to liberate Daedalus. At the same time Major Richard Blake and Nathan Hale arrived at the besieged facility and attempted to input the kill code to destroy Daedalus. Malikov radioed Blake to warn him that he must deactivate Daedalus' prison in order to enter the code. Blake reluctantly ordered Malikov to shut down the shielding, but he was too late to kill Daedalus, who quickly broke free. Malikov escaped the base with Hale and Blake, and retreated to America.[11]

Malikov later ran multiple tests on Hale. By that time, Malikov had augmented the Gamma series vaccine that was made from Crawlers and inoculated several soldiers into becoming immune to the virus, creating the Sentinels.

The Chimeran War[]

Over the next two years, Malikov acted as Nathan Hale's supervising physician and constantly ran experiments to reverse engineer Chimeran technology and study the growth of the virus within the Sentinels. He developed inhibitor serums that temporarily prevent the Sentinels from succumbing to the virus. Over time he began to notice that Hale's immunity to the virus was failing, and he feared what would happen. At that time America had slowly began losing large amounts of its territory to the Chimera, who under the command of Daedalus had devised a new strategy to reactivate all of the Chimeran towers on the planet and recover the newly discovered Gray Tech components.

Malikov later discovered the importance of the Gray Tech components and ordered the recovery of the technology as a top priority.[12] Studies of the Gray Tech components were conducted by Project Prometheus, which led Malikov to discover that the Chimeran towers were over 60 million years old, and the existence of another race that waged war with the Chimera at that time.[13] Due to these discoveries, Malikov supported Dr. Julia Cathcart's Prometheus Weapon theory and what could possibly be the cause for the Chimera's defeat millions of years ago. From his extensive research on the relationships between the Chimeran fleet, the Chimeran tower network, and the Gray Tech, Malikov believed that they were to create a "spatial distortion bubble" that could be used to transport large objects over a great distance, which was being used by the Chimera on a global scale.[14] He was quickly dismissed for his theories by other SRPA scientists and often came to blows with Major Blake, but SRPA accepted Malikov's position that the confiscation of the Gray Tech was vital to prevent Daedalus from accomplishing his mysterious goal.[15]

Resistance 2[]

Malikov was performing an inhibitor treatment on Hale in SRPA Station 3 in San Francisco when the Chimera began a full-scale invasion of America on May 15, 1953. Malikov believed that Hale might only have nineteen hours left to live and was reluctant when Hale had to go defend the base. Hale rescued Malikov when the base began to flood, and Malikov was evacuated to Station Genesis.

A few hours later, the Chimeran flagship breached the Liberty Defense Perimeter and attacked Station Genesis. Hale solely decided to try and rescue Malikov instead of getting his now overdue inhibitor treatment. Malikov helplessly watched as Daedalus activated the Bryce Canyon hub tower before Hale found Malikov and led him out of the base. Malikov explained to Hale the origins of Daedalus and Hale himself of being injected with the same Pure Chimeran DNA as Daedalus. He and Hale soon escaped Station Genesis while destroying The Swarm. Malikov informed Hale that stopping Daedalus from activating the tower network was imperative.

On the recommendations from Malikov, SRPA launched a full assault on Chimera-controlled Chicago to shutdown the city's Chimeran tower. Echo Team managed to clear an air corridor for Malikov to reach the tower and deactivate it. Unfortunately, as he deactivated the tower, it was remotely reactivated by Daedalus from Iceland. SRPA then led an assault on the Holar Tower, which ultimately fails, and Hale was put into a coma for six weeks, forcing Malikov to find another way to reverse the conversion process.

Following those six weeks, the Chimera breached and devastated the Defense Perimeter and Daedalus managed to reactivate the tower network throughout Earth, and the Chimeran fleet gathered above the Chicxulub crater to carry out their final plan. During those weeks, Malikov observed the fleet's presence over the Chicxulub crater, and knowing the full intentions of Daedalus' plans, created a plan in which he hopes to destroy the fleet, in which a fission bomb would be detonated in the middle of the crater, creating a chain reaction that would wipe out the fleet.[16] As preparations for Malikov's plan were committed by SRPA for Operation Black Eden, Malikov watched over Hale's comatose body in a field base in Cocodrie and apprehensively acknowledged in his notes that should either Hale or Daedalus triumph over the other, a terrible and unforeseen consequence would wait for humankind.[17]

Malikov began working on a Zeta series of inhibitors and believed that it would take two weeks for him to inoculate Hale. Blake however, claimed that he would need Hale for Black Eden, and Hale would need to be awaken for it, despite the risks.[18] After Hale was woken from his coma, Malikov sadly informed him that he has only three hours left to live. At this point, Malikov's guilt of indirectly creating the Cloven and Daedalus reaches its extremity, in which he considered committing suicide by injecting himself with four vials of morphine.[19] However, Malikov did not go through with it, as he then realized that he was possibly the only person in the world to possess the foremost knowledge about the Chimera, and had decided to instead dedicate his life to doing everything he can to stop the Chimera.

SRPA's operation to destroy the fleet and Daedalus succeeded, but Daedalus accomplished the Chimera's goal. Malikov's speculations about the tower network's purpose were proven wrong. In reality, the towers opened a wormhole to the home world of the Pure Chimera.

After informing Hale and seeing off Echo Team as they started Operation Black Eden, Malikov quickly headed Northwest to rendezvous with other surviving Sentinels, U.S. soldiers and Freedom First fighters in New York, to launch another operation, this time led by President Thomas Voss and Captain Marvin Kawecki on the central Chimeran Hub Tower, in an attempt to liberate New York. The assault ultimately became a failure in which Malikov was among the few survivors who escaped.

Following the events of Operation Black Eden, Malikov studied Hale's corpse after the latter succumbed to the virus and was executed by Joseph Capelli. Malikov discovered unique antigens within Hale's blood cells which he isolated and cultivated a vaccine capable of eradicating the Chimeran virus, which it is dubbed the Hale Vaccine. The vaccine was mass produced and administered to the surviving human population and the Sentinels. Malikov later observed the effects of the fission bomb from Operation Black Eden in which he learned the bomb's detonation was responsible for causing a massive energy surge in the tower network that created the wormhole over New York City. The portal was kept open by the New York Tower, which also controlled the tower network to cool Earth's environment to be hospitable to the Chimera while eliminating the remnants of humanity. Malikov was present to witness SRPA launching a mass assault to destroy the New York tower to stop the Chimeran terraforming process which only ended in failure. In the next four years, Malikov made the decision to launch another mission to destroy the tower and save humanity, in which he sought the help of the former Sentinel Joseph Capelli.

On August 7, 1957, after four long months searching for Capelli he finally arrived in Haven, Oklahoma. Capelli was furious with Malikov's arrival, for he had inadvertently brought the Chimera to Haven due to being followed by Chimeran drones. Malikov informed him and his family about the Chimera's intentions in New York and that no one will survive through the winter. He then tells Capelli that he is the only one who knows how to stop the Chimera and that Capelli is the only Sentinel left and the only person who can protect him. Capelli initially coldly rejected his offer but was convinced by his wife Susan to help Malikov. Malikov and Capelli escaped Haven before it was destroyed by a Terraformer.

The two traveled on riverboat through the Mississippi River for two days. They were then attacked by Goliaths and their boat was destroyed, stranding them in St. Louis. Malikov was injured and suffered a bacterial infection, forcing them to seek shelter in a coal tower. They eventually meet the Remnants led by Charlie Tent, and Capelli helped them in capturing a Chimeran power core for their VTOL, in exchange for penicillin for Malikov's infection, and a ride to New York. After acquiring the power core, Malikov and Capelli were given a lift on their VTOL. They travel over near Mount Pleasant where they were attacked by a Chimeran dropship, causing Capelli to fall out. Malikov was dropped off nearby to reunite with Capelli. They soon meet Jean Rose, a member of Mount Pleasant and were invited to stay at the town. Capelli helped Mount Pleasant by rescuing Jean Rose's husband Jonathan and slaying a Feral Chimera called Satan that terrorized the town. In exchange for Capelli's actions, Jonathan repaired a train which Malikov and Capelli used to resume their journey.

During their journey, they came under attack by a gang of hostile survivors called the Wardens. Although they managed to fight off the marauders from taking their train, they collided into a stamped of Widowmakers which they derailed their train. Malikov survived the crash and found Capelli trapped under a train wheel. Just as Malikov tried to help Capelli he was viciously attacked by the leader of the Wardens, Mick Cutler. After Malikov was left brutalized, Cutler killed him by beheading with a machete. Capelli avenged Malikov by killing Mick and he eventually finished their mission in destroying the tower and closing the wormhole.

Sometime after the Chimera were finally defeated, Malikov's body was recovered and was buried in the Nathan Hale Cemetery, a final tribute to his lifelong service and dedication in saving humanity from the Chimera.

Personality[]

Malikov appears to be a kind and intelligent man who wanted to help humankind. However, he was guilt-ridden for being responsible at the deaths he had caused and the monsters he had created, specifically the Cloven and Daedalus. Malikov was also described by his SRPA colleagues such as Richard P. Feynman to be a very strange and eccentric man, but was likeable.[14]

He cared a lot about his patients, especially Hale and his irreversible condition. He was also not above sacrificing people for the greater good. He was never seen angry, but he had had disagreements with Blake in the past. Although he has made mistakes in the past, he was hopeful that humanity may have the chance to prevail against the Chimera from his efforts to create the Sentinels to the Hale Vaccine.

Description[]

Malikov is of average height, with brown eyes and is roughly in his 60's. He is balding and has gray hair and a gray beard. He wears circular, shaded glasses and wears a khaki SRPA scientist uniform. In battle he usually carries a Rossmore 238 Combat Shotgun. Although, he later uses the Rossmore 239 Combat Shotgun instead.
