Radar topography reveals the 180 kilometer (112 mi) ring of the crater; clustered around the crater's trough are numerous sinkholes, suggesting a prehistoric oceanic basin in the depression left by the impact (Image courtesy NASA/JPL-Caltech).

The Chicxulub crater in Mexico is a massive crater that is believed to have been created over 66 million years ago by an meteorite impact. The crater itself is 180 kilometers in diameter. It was widely believed that the resulting impact was responsible for the K-T extinction event, which caused the extinction of all non avian dinosaurs and over 75% of life on Earth.[1]

In the alternate-history of Resistance, the crater was caused by an ancient and cataclysmic war waged between the Chimera and their unknown enemies.

History[]

The Chicxulub crater was believed by SRPA scientists, including Dr. Fyodor Malikov, to be the last visible remnant of an event that ended an ancient war between the Pure Chimera and an unknown alien race millions of years ago.[2] Malikov furthermore theorized that the crater was the focal point of the Chimeran tower network on Earth.[2][3]

Following the fall of the Liberty Defense Perimeter on May 28, 1953, Daedalus led the Chimeran fleet to the Chicxulub crater to begin the final phase of the Chimera's plan; excavating a massive Chimeran tower at the center of the crater. The tower itself was only partially-uncovered, but was described as being four times the size of the hub tower located in Chicago, and was the central hub for the entire global tower network. With the fleet constantly assembling over the crater, a massive army of over 10,000 Chimera were deployed to uncover the tower.[4]

Desperate to stop the activation of the Chicxulub tower, SRPA initiated Operation Black Eden on June 26 to destroy the fleet with a fission bomb (dubbed "Nellie") on the fleet's flagship, and by extension killing Daedalus. The mission succeeded, with Daedalus being personally killed by Nathan Hale, and the bomb destroying the fleet.[5] However, the ultimate outcome only allowed the bomb's nuclear explosion to trigger a massive energy surge through the Chimeran tower network, creating a portal to the Chimera's home planet over New York City.[6]

Trivia[]

  • In reality, the Chicxulub crater was actually discovered in 1978 by geophysicist Glen Penfield during a scout for potential oil drilling locations while working for the Pemex oil company.
