- "We flew directly to Manchester. Soldiers had been trying to recover the convoy ever since my squad had been ambushed. They knew what was in it. They knew it was our last hope for defeating the Chimera."
- ―Rachel Parker[src]
The Battle of Manchester was fought between the British Army and Chimeran forces on July 11-12, 1951. The British battled and repelled the Chimera from freeing a captured Angel in Manchester, England.
Prelude[]
After the Chimera invaded and conquered the United Kingdom in November 1950, the British Armed Forces were forced to wage a costly guerrilla war against the alien occupiers. Nearly a year later the British successfully captured an Angel, a high-ranking Chimera. Desperate for support, the British negotiated with the United States government for military aid and support in exchange for the Angel.
British intelligence officer Captain Rachel Parker led the convoy carrying the Angel to the exchange at York. However, while en route to the rendezvous the convoy was ambushed in Manchester by the Chimera, with Parker captured and taken to the Grimsby conversion center. Unaware and unprepared of the Chimera, the Americans that were sent to reinforce York were utterly wiped out.[1]
While the exchange failed, British soldiers under the command of Captain Mitchell fought the Chimera and attempted to recover the captured Angel after the ambush.[2]
Battle[]
The convoy was stranded on the western side of Manchester where it was guarded by Stalkers, whose anti-air weapons prevented British air support from helping Mitchell's men. Without air support, the British were fighting a losing battle as human reinforcements trickled in by traversing the Chimeran-infested city. Mitchell and his forces were too late to reach the convoy which was surrounded by entrenched Chimera.[2]
On the morning of July 12, U.S. Sergeant Nathan Hale rescued Parker and arrived in Manchester to assist the British while Parker oversaw the battle from the air. Hale, a super-soldier experimented by Project Abraham, fought to Mitchell's position and helped men to push back the Chimera. After the British gained the upper hand in the battle, Chimeran dropships dispatched reinforcements along with a Stalker. Following an intense battle, Hale and the British eliminated the reinforcements and destroyed the Stalker.[2]
Aftermath[]
With the Chimera and Stalkers eliminated, the British recovered the Angel and airlifted its cell to Northern Command. The British temporarily hold off their exchange with the Americans until after conducting an operation in sealing a Chimeran tunnel nexus in Nottingham.[3] Despite having regained the Angel, the Chimera would later launch another attempt to free the Angel by directly attacking Northern Command a day later which ended in the Angel's death at the hands of Nathan Hale.[4]
